A Day in the Life of a Trainee Rural Surveyor

The role of a Rural Surveyor can be extremely varied with no two days ever the same.  It was this variation and the concept of spending a mixture of time both in and out the office with a hands-on approach that made me want to pursue this career.

My journey towards becoming a Rural Surveyor began at Harper Adams University. Here I studied Rural Enterprise and Land Management for four years which included a 12 month placement year at the Bolton Abbey Estate.  Following my graduation, I started my role here at Armitstead Barnett in our Garstang office and, over the next 12 months, I will be preparing to undertake the examination process to RICS status.

A typical day in the office will consist of day-to-day admin and email correspondence as well as assisting our qualified surveyors and partners with their current workload. This includes writing valuation reports, preparing compensation claims and preparing sales particulars for all types of rural property from bare land to stately homes!

As well as this, I specialise in advising clients on the grant funding opportunities available on their holding, whether this be through the Sustainable Farming Incentive, Countryside Stewardship, or alternate schemes available for farm productivity and animal health and welfare.

When I joined the firm, the partners said this would not be a 9 to 5 role and well… they were right! Fortunately, I am used to the long hours with my time outside of work still comprising all things rural whether this be at my local young farmers club or getting my hands dirty down on the farm.

That said, the last 12 months have flown by, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with our diverse client base and obtaining a wide range of information, knowledge, and experience so early on in my career. I look forward to what the next 12 months will bring and hopefully will achieve my goal of becoming a fully qualified Chartered Surveyor!
