Why I love where I live – Thornley-with Wheatley, Ribble Valley

17th June 2021

Thornley-with-Wheatley is a small English Civil Parish in the Borough of the Ribble Valley, an area known for its outstanding natural beauty, rolling countryside, scenic walks and of course an array of traditional pubs.

As a farmer’s daughter and being brought up on a dairy farm in Thornley, I am a lover of the outdoors and a keen walker, so the rural location is ideal for me.  One of my favourite walks is Beacon Fell Country Park which offers a superb family day out, having a variety of woodland routes to reach the summit, children’s obstacles, café and picnic area.  A couple of more challenging walks are Parlick & Fairsnape Fell and Jeffery Hill, where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the Valley and almost always end up with a pub lunch, whichever route you take.

Thornley is home to some lovely places to dine such as The Derby Arms, a bustling country pub with contemporary dining rooms, feature fireplaces and a large central bar, which create a series of ambient spaces perfect for drinks with friends and family.  A short walk away is Little Town Farm shop, a splendid tearoom that offers a peaceful setting, the highest quality produce and their renowned signature yoghurts.

I love living in Thornley and being a rural area, it is home to lots of dairy farms and equestrian facilities.  As well as the more rural properties, Thornley has a variety of houses, most with a unique history dating from the 17th century properties to the more modern detached and semi-detached homes.  Whatever you are looking for Thornley has it all, barn conversions, bungalows, cottages, all with a supporting infrastructure of outstanding primary and secondary schools to choose from.

Nestled within picturesque countryside yet benefitting from being within easy access to the quaint village of Chipping, idyllic market towns of Longridge and Clitheroe and a short drive from main motorway connections to access Manchester and the Lake District, it truly is the best of both worlds.
